Why hasn't anyone done this
or something similar before?
A product called "J-Disc"
used to be on the market in the late 80's, and
it was a production disc wheel with a plastic/kevlar
cover. For whatever reason, they discontinued
production, but you can still find the
occasional 7 speed tubular J-Disc on ebay for
$400 or $500.
Also, a company called
excel sports makes 'CH wheel covers' but they
weigh around a pound. Wheelbuilders.com also
makes a bolt on wheel cover, around the same
weight.
Is it durable?
IMPORTANT : These covers are not
meant to stand up to torsional abuse. That being
said, under normal use (no poking holes with a
screwdriver) the disc wheel will stand up to the
elements for quite some time. Be careful with
your wheel, if subject to normal use without
puncturing or undue lateral pressure, it should
last you a long time. We suggest that you have
an extra wheel for training as to not compromise
the integrity of your FlyWheel. Unfortunately,
we can't guarantee our covers, because it's
impossible to tell if the cover was damaged from
neglect or normal wear and tear. However,
we offer a 55% price discount for customers
purchasing a re-covered wheel.
Is it permanent?
Yes
What about the 'Wump Wump'
noise of a disc wheel?
Wheels built with our covers
make more of a "whoosh whoosh noise", distinctive
and similar to the 'wump wump'.
What types of
wheels do you cover?
Any kind of
wheel with 1CM + (apprx) of rim below the
braking surface.
What about
custom designs?
Our wheels ship
with contrasting black/white background and "FLY"
emblazoned across the wheel. For a small fee you can
emboss your own custom text. We do not offer custom
graphics, but almost any color is possible,
including chrome, neons, flat blacks, and
transparent (not recommended (they're ugly). It is
possible to spray paint / stencil designs or vinyl
decals after market, however.
